Sheep in New Zealand!

May 27th, 2009 by ilyani | 12 Comments | Filed in New Zealand

S for sheep! Did you know that New Zealand is home to 4 millions of people and 40 millions of sheep? Come and meet one of them here:

From Groovynannies. The first sheep were landed in New Zealand by Captain Cook in 1773. Since then sheep are farmed largely in this country for theair meat and wool and New Zealand now contributes 25% of world total strong wool production.

From Buttercup65. Now I envy these sheep coz they live in such a heavenly beautiful place as this!! See the mountain! And speaking of heavenly, they say sheep DO go to heaven, meanwhile goats go to hell! I am not sure what the poor goats have done wrong!

Kiwi!

May 12th, 2009 by ilyani | No Comments | Filed in New Zealand

After Koalas in Australia, here now we have Kiwi from New Zeland!! :D Kiwis are domestic birds of New Zealand, and they can’t fly!! Kiwis are the smallest in the group of flightless birds, yet they lay the largest eggs in relation to their body size.

From Krissiebaby. This card is a perfect New Zealand card! Kiwi with NZ flag!

NZ-1166 from Noelene. This is a Little Spotted Kiwi (yes, it’s a species name, also known as Apteryx owenii) in its native haitat. This Kiwi is seldom seen in the daylight, as it likes to find for food at night in the forest!

From FunkyMunky. This is a Brown Kiwi.. I can’t really tell the difference between this and above Kiwi though. But this one has longer fur, doesn’t it?

Maori culture

January 30th, 2009 by ilyani | No Comments | Filed in New Zealand

I still haven’t got a new scanner *sigh* so all I can do is to blog about my randomly chosen old postcards from the Flickr. Okay now I would love to share my postcards on Maori culture – yep, from New Zealand. I have come to know Maoris from the postcards I received, yeah obviously, and they’re believed to be the origin people of New Zealand with so colorful and creative culture.

This is official card (NZ-4761) I received from Rhonda which I can’t help loving :) It shows Maori children wearing their traditional costume. Maori people make up about 15% of NZ population.

And this is from Kasha10 showing Maori dancers and those facial art :D Alright – it’s some kind of face tattoo called Moku and is meant to scare the enemies during the battle. I don’t know why it sounds funny to me.

This lovely card came from From Buttercup65.

Maori woman from Feordiegirl84. The while balls she is holding are called Poi and are swung on woven strings when dancing.

And this one is very interesting, came from funkymunky showing traditional carvings of the Maoris. In the past whale bone was used for these carvings (huh?) and nowadays it is predominantly cattle bone.
