Angkor Wat

February 24th, 2009 by ilyani | No Comments | Filed in Cambodia

My postcards from Cambodia have to be this most significant site Angkor Wat. It’s one of two great complexes of ancient temples in Southeast Asia, and another is Bagan in Myanmar. The temples of Angkor were built by the Khmer civilization between 802 and 1220 AD, which are among humankind’s most amazing architectural achievements.

Benn sent me this card from KL right after he came back from Cambodia. This is a closer look of Angkor Wat’s main entrance. Angkor Wat is the only ancient temple to have remained as a significant religious centre since its foundation and it’s amazing to know that within centuries this very temple has been through civilizations of two religions – Hindu and Buddhism.

This piture doesn’t judge how big Angkor Wat is. When he went there it took him at least half an hour to walk from outside to the main building inside. Angkor Wat was originally built as a tomb for King Suriyawaraman II, also to worship Vishnu, one of the Hindu goddess.

This is one of the Stone Heads of Bodhisattva Avilokiteshvara, in Bayon temple inside Angkor Wat which Chat noir refered as “.. many faces of these serene and calm looking head statues. Wish I could go and just sit and draw..” :D Hmm I am just waiting the time I can really go traveling on my own (or have a buddy with me) so I can book AirAsia ticket to Siem Reap!
